Activity Name: "Lights Out on HIV Infection"

Target Audience: Health or Global Studies Classrooms, Offices

Source: 2009 WAD Planning Committee

Objective: To give concrete meaning to the 9 ½ minute frequency of HIV infection in the US

Materials Needed: none, other than a light switch, a volunteer and HIV facts

Steps to Complete Activity:

  1. For a designated period (class period, or office work day), a volunteer will switch the overhead lights off and on every 9 ½ minutes and (optional) read an HIV fact to peers while the light is off.
  2. Debrief before the end of the class or office day with questions about why HIV virus continues to spread… and what that rate of infection looks like at the end of one year.
